Where Do Shell Buttons Come From? A Journey from Ocean and River to Your Garment
Pick up a genuine shell button and tilt it towards the light. The surface shifts from cream to silver, from soft pink to green, and every button in your hand looks slightly different from the next. That glow has a long story behind it. Each one began as a living shell, grown slowly in clear water.
For fashion brands, designers, tailors and curious makers, knowing where shell buttons come from is more than a nice detail for a product description. Origin shapes colour, thickness, lustre and the character of the finished button. It helps you choose the right shell and tell an honest story to your customers. In this article we follow the journey of natural shell buttons from ocean and river to the garment you are making.
Ocean shells and one river shell
The big picture is simple. Of the shell families we work with, all come from the ocean except one: river shell, which grows in freshwater rivers in China. Mother of pearl, abalone, akoya and trocas are all sea shells, grown in warm, clean coastal waters from Australia and Indonesia to Japan and Tahiti.
Just as important: every one of these shells is cultured. The shells used for our buttons are grown in pearl and shell farms, giving a steady, traceable source and consistent quality from one order to the next.
What all these shells share is nacre, the iridescent inner layer that the animal builds up in thin sheets over time. Light passing through those layers creates the famous play of colour. Our factory in Hong Kong cuts button blanks from the thickest, most even part of the shell, then shapes, drills and polishes them into finished buttons, typically in sizes from 14L to 40L.
Mother of Pearl: Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Tahiti
Mother of pearl is the classic shell button and the one most people picture first. White and yellow mother of pearl come from ocean farms in Australia, the Philippines or Indonesia. White mother of pearl has a bright, clean, silvery lustre; it can be white on both sides with no skin, the most premium version, or white on top with the natural skin left on the back. Yellow mother of pearl carries a warm golden glow and is offered in the same two versions.
Black mother of pearl comes from Tahiti. Its natural colour is a deep, dark tone with shades of grey, green and peacock blue moving across the surface. Smoke colour, grey, mixed colours and sprayed colours are also possible.
Mother of pearl buttons are the choice for fine dress shirts, blouses, knitwear, suits and bridal wear. Explore the full range on our mother of pearl buttons page.
Abalone: Australia and China
Abalone shell buttons are the most colourful of all. Red abalone, also known as Australian abalone, comes from the ocean around Australia. Its nacre shows rich swirls of pink, green and blue with a strong, lively depth. Red abalone is normally made as flat 2-hole buttons from 14L to 40L, and also in larger sizes up to 120L.
Gold abalone comes from ocean farms in China. It has a warmer, honeyed tone with golden and green highlights, and grade T2 is a popular choice. Both bring personality to jackets, dresses and resort wear. See more on our abalone shell buttons page.
Akoya: Japan
Akoya shell is famous as the home of the classic Japanese pearl, and it comes from pearl farms in the ocean around Japan. The nacre is fine and delicate, with a soft white base and gentle pink and silver reflections that look refined rather than bold.
Akoya buttons are normally flat with 2 holes, in sizes from 14L to 40L, and grade T2 is especially popular. They are well suited to shirts, lingerie, children's wear, light blouses and elegant knitwear. Discover the details on our akoya shell buttons page.
River Shell: the rivers of China
River shell is the one freshwater member of the family. It grows in shell farms in the rivers of China and brings its own gentle character to shell buttons. River shell is white on both sides, or white on top with skin on the back, and it has a soft iridescent shadow that gives every button a subtle depth.
It is made in many styles from 14L to 40L, with a thickness of 1.6 mm or more depending on size. River shell is a versatile choice for shirts, workwear-inspired pieces, casual collections, knitwear and everyday fashion, and it dyes beautifully when you want a custom colour. Trocas: Indonesia and the Pacific
Trocas shell comes from the ocean around Indonesia and the wider Pacific. Its cone-shaped shell has a creamy white nacre, often with a natural pattern from the outer layer that gives each button a warm, organic feel.
Trocas buttons are made in different styles from 14L to 40L, with a thickness of 1.6 mm or more. They have a sturdy, satisfying weight that suits overshirts, jackets, knitwear, denim and natural-fibre collections. Find out more on our trocas shell buttons page.
Why cultured shells matter
Choosing cultured shell buttons is good news for every part of the supply chain. Here is why it matters for brands and makers:
- Consistency: shells grown in farms develop under steady conditions, so colour, lustre and thickness stay even across batches.
- Traceability: each family has a clear origin, from Tahiti for black mother of pearl to Japan for akoya. Share it with confidence on hang tags and product pages.
- Steady supply: farmed shells are grown in planned cycles, which supports dependable planning for seasonal collections and larger production runs.
- Care for the sea: pearl and shell farming relies on clean, healthy water, so farmers have every reason to look after the environment where their shells grow.

FAQ
Are all shell buttons made from sea shells?
Most of them are. Mother of pearl, abalone, akoya and trocas all come from the ocean. River shell is the freshwater exception: it grows in the rivers of China and offers its own soft, iridescent look.
Are the shells used for your buttons farmed?
Yes. All the shells we use are cultured shells grown in pearl and shell farms. This gives consistent quality, a clear origin for each family and a steady supply for collections and reorders.
Why does each shell button look slightly different?
Nacre is a natural material built up in fine layers, so colour and lustre vary gently from shell to shell. That individuality is part of the charm of genuine shell buttons.
Can I see the shells before placing a bulk order?
Of course. We provide samples before bulk production, so you can compare colours, sizes, profiles and finishes on your own fabric. Request them through our wholesale page or contact us with your questions.
