Mother of Pearl Buttons

Cut from pearl oysters – the brightest nacre of all, in white, black, yellow and brown.

Mother of pearl buttons are cut from the inner layer of pearl oyster shells, the same lustrous material that forms around a natural pearl. Each button carries a soft, layered glow that moves with the light. Because the material is natural, every piece has its own small variations in tone and pattern, and that individuality is exactly what designers and shirt makers value.

At shellbuttons.com we offer genuine mother of pearl buttons in four natural families: white, black and smoke, yellow, and brown. They are produced by our partner shell button factory in Hong Kong, while Polkom in Sofia, Bulgaria, looks after customers across Europe. Fashion brands and garment factories can order custom wholesale runs, and designers, tailors and makers can buy smaller quantities in our online shop.

Origin of mother of pearl

Where our mother of pearl comes from: white and yellow mother of pearl shells come from Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia, and black mother of pearl comes from Tahiti. All of them are ocean shells, and all are cultured – grown in pearl oyster farms rather than taken from the wild.

Mother of pearl, also called nacre, is the iridescent lining that some molluscs build on the inside of their shells. Pearl oysters lay it down in very thin, overlapping layers of mineral and organic material. Light passing through these fine layers is reflected and scattered, which creates the gentle rainbow shimmer known as orient.

The shells used for mother of pearl buttons mainly come from pearl oysters of warm tropical seas. Different species and different parts of the shell give different base colours: some shells are typically silvery white inside, others have a dark grey to black edge, and others show a warm golden or brownish band near the lip. Button makers cut each blank according to these natural zones, so one family offers several natural colours.

After cutting, the blanks are shaped, drilled and polished. The outer surface of the shell, often called the skin, can be ground away for a clean look on both sides or kept on the back for a more natural, rustic character.

Colours and versions

White mother of pearl

White MOP is the classic shirt button: bright, clean and luminous. It comes in two versions. The first is white on both sides with the skin fully removed, which is the most premium and most expensive option, ideal where the back may be seen, as on cuffs. The second has a white top with the natural shell skin on the back, offering the same elegant front at a more accessible level.

Black and smoke mother of pearl

Black MOP shows a naturally dark colour with a deep, almost metallic play of green, blue and violet light. Smoke colour gives a softer, greyish tone that sits beautifully on mid-grey, navy and charcoal fabrics. Grey and mixed colours are also available, and sprayed colours can be produced when a collection needs a specific shade.

Yellow mother of pearl

Yellow MOP has a warm golden glow that works wonderfully with cream, camel, olive and earthy palettes. It is available yellow on both sides, or with a yellow top and natural skin on the back.

Brown mother of pearl

Brown MOP shows a natural brown tone with gentle lustre. It suits linen, tweed, corduroy, workwear-inspired shirts and autumn collections, adding warmth while keeping the refined look of real shell.

Sizes and thickness

Button sizes are given in lignes (L), the traditional button industry measure, where 1 ligne is about 0.635 mm. Our mother of pearl buttons are typically produced from 14L to 40L, with a thickness of 1.6 mm or more depending on diameter.

16L (≈10 mm) Classic dress shirt front, blouses, lightweight knit
18L (≈11.5 mm) Casual shirts, polo plackets, dresses

Finishing and customisation

For brands and garment factories, mother of pearl buttons can be tailored to a collection in many ways:

  • Holes and attachment: 2 or 4 holes, or a shank on request.
  • Profile: flat, rim or dome shapes, from minimal shirt buttons to bolder jacket styles.
  • Back finish: polished back for a clean look on both sides, or natural skin back for an organic character.
  • Colour: natural shell colours, or dyed and sprayed colours to match a fabric.
  • Branding: laser engraving of your logo or initials on request, a subtle and lasting signature.
  • Samples: samples are prepared before bulk production, so you can approve colour, size and finish on your own fabric.

Where to use mother of pearl buttons

Mother of pearl is the traditional choice for quality dress shirts, and it shines just as well across a wider wardrobe:

  • Shirts and blouses: white MOP for crisp poplin and oxford, smoke or black for dark and evening shirts.
  • Knitwear: larger 20L–28L buttons on cardigans in cashmere, merino or cotton.
  • Tailoring: waistcoats, summer blazers and linen jackets, where yellow or brown shell gives a warm accent.
  • Dresses and childrenswear: small white or yellow buttons add a delicate, heirloom feeling.
  • Accessories and crafts: bags, jewellery and handmade projects.

Care for shell buttons

Mother of pearl is durable and keeps its lustre for many years with a little care:

  • Washing: machine or hand wash at moderate temperatures; a gentle cycle and closing the buttons before washing help protect the edges.
  • Detergents: mild detergents are best; avoid strong bleach and acidic cleaners, which can dull the nacre.
  • Ironing: iron around the buttons rather than directly over them, or press from the reverse side with a cloth.
  • Dry cleaning: shell buttons generally cope well with dry cleaning; for delicate pieces you can ask the cleaner to protect or cover the buttons.

How to choose the right shell

Mother of pearl buttons are the most versatile choice: elegant, bright and available in four natural colour families, they suit almost any garment from formal shirts to knitwear. If you want the strongest colour play, abalone shell buttons offer vivid green, blue and pink reflections, ideal as a statement detail. For a fine, softly iridescent shirt button, akoya shell buttons are a refined option, especially in the popular T2 grade. River shell buttons bring a white look with a gentle iridescent shadow, and trocas shell buttons offer a natural, characterful surface for casual and outerwear styles.

FAQ

Are your mother of pearl buttons made from real shell?

Yes. Every button is cut from genuine pearl oyster shell, so each one has its own natural lustre and slight variations in pattern and tone.

What is the difference between "both sides" and "skin on the back"?

A both-sides button has the outer shell skin removed, so front and back show clean nacre; this is the most premium version. A skin-back button keeps the natural outer layer on the reverse while the front shows full lustre.

Can you match a specific colour?

Natural colours include white, black, smoke, grey, mixed, yellow and brown. Dyed and sprayed colours can be produced to match your fabric, and samples are made for approval before bulk production.

Can you engrave our logo on the buttons?

Yes, laser engraving of logos is available on request. Send your artwork through the contact page or the wholesale form.

Can I buy small quantities?

Yes. Designers, tailors and makers can buy mother of pearl buttons in smaller quantities in our online shop, while brands and factories can request custom wholesale production.

Whether you are developing a new shirt line or finishing a single handmade garment, mother of pearl buttons add natural light and quiet luxury to every piece.
