Akoya Shell Buttons
Cut from the akoya pearl oyster – thin, light and silvery with a multicoloured shimmer.
Akoya shell buttons are cut from the shell of the akoya pearl oyster, the same small oyster famous for producing classic round pearls. In the button trade they are often called agoya buttons, and the two names describe the same material. The inner layer of the shell is a fine, bright nacre with a soft silvery-white glow and delicate hints of pink, blue and green that move as the light changes. Cut, shaped and polished into buttons, it gives a garment a quiet, refined finish that people notice up close.
What makes akoya special is the combination of a fine, even lustre and a slim, elegant profile. The shell is relatively thin, so akoya shell buttons are usually flat with 2 holes and sit neatly on shirts, blouses and light knitwear. Each natural button carries its own subtle pattern, part of the charm of genuine shell.
At shellbuttons.com we work together with a shell button factory in Hong Kong, with our Sofia office serving customers across Europe. Brands and garment factories can request samples and a price offer, while designers, tailors and makers can buy smaller quantities in our online shop.
Origin of akoya shell
Where our akoya comes from: our akoya shells come from Japan, the traditional home of akoya pearl culture. They are ocean shells, cultured in pearl farms rather than taken from the wild.
The akoya pearl oyster is a marine bivalve of the genus Pinctada, found mainly in the warm coastal waters of the western Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is widely cultivated for pearls, especially in East Asia, and the shells are a valued material once the pearl harvest is complete.
Like other pearl oysters, the akoya builds the inside of its shell from nacre, also called mother of pearl. The oyster lays down extremely thin layers of aragonite crystals bound with an organic protein. Light passing through and reflecting off these stacked layers creates the characteristic iridescence. Because the akoya shell is compact and finely layered, its nacre typically shows a smooth, close-grained lustre, which polishes to a beautiful soft shine.

Colours and versions
The natural colour of akoya shell is a luminous silvery white. Look closely and you will see gentle overtones: a warm pink blush on some pieces, cooler blue and green reflections on others.
Buttons are sorted into grades according to the evenness of colour, the clarity of the lustre and the surface quality. Grade T2 is a popular grade that balances a beautiful appearance with good value for regular collections. Higher grades are selected for the most even colour and brightest shine, which suits premium shirts and occasion wear.
The back of the button can be polished, so both sides show nacre, or it can keep a natural skin back for a more organic, textured feel. Akoya shell can also be dyed. Because the nacre is translucent, dyed colours keep a pearly depth, and soft pastels, greys and deeper fashion shades are all possible.
Sizes and thickness
Button sizes are measured in lignes (L), where 1 ligne is about 0.635 mm. Akoya shell buttons are normally produced from 14L to 40L. Thickness follows the size and the natural shell, so smaller buttons are finer and larger ones a little sturdier.

- Shirts and blouses: the classic use, from formal white shirts to silk and linen blouses.
- Knitwear: cardigans and fine-gauge sweaters gain a light, luxurious detail.

- Children's and baby wear: small sizes give a delicate, heirloom feel.
- Nightwear and loungewear: pyjamas in cotton or silk look refined with pearly buttons.
- Accessories and crafts: bags, jewellery, embroidery and handmade pieces.
Design idea: pair natural white akoya with white or pastel fabrics for a tonal look, or use a skin-back button on denim and chambray for a relaxed, natural detail.
Care for akoya shell buttons
Natural shell is hard and durable, and a few simple habits keep it looking its best:
- Washing: wash at moderate temperatures and choose a gentle cycle where possible. Buttoning the garment and turning it inside out helps protect the buttons.
- Detergents: mild detergents are best; avoid bleach and strong chemicals, which can dull the nacre.
- Ironing: iron around the buttons or on the reverse side, using a cloth over the button area if needed.
- Dry cleaning: shell buttons generally handle dry cleaning well; for valuable pieces, ask the cleaner to cover or protect the buttons.
How to choose: akoya and other shells
Each natural shell has its own personality, and the right one depends on the look you want:
- Akoya is ideal when you want a slim, flat button with a fine silvery lustre and soft overtones, perfect for shirts and blouses.
- Mother of pearl buttons offer a wide palette of white, black, yellow and brown shells in many styles and thicknesses, from 1.6 mm upwards.
- Abalone shell buttons bring bold, multicoloured iridescence for statement designs, with red abalone available in very large sizes.
- River shell buttons give a white button with an attractive iridescent shadow and a versatile, everyday elegance.
If you are unsure, order samples of two or three shells and compare them on your fabric.
